Opportunity Snapshot

Opportunity Description

Empire Today operates a distinct business model within its market.  Empire’s core mission is Making Beautiful New Floors Easy, and its supply chain plays a mission-critical role in that service.  Uniquely among its competitors, Empire meets 95% of demand from warehouse stock and installs a large amount of its sales within five days from the initial sales appointment.   To do this, Empire operates 10 Regional Distribution Centers (~75k-125k sq ft) and approximately 40 smaller, non-stocking locations (with customer-facing operations and simpler warehouses).

Empire is three years into the process of meaningfully upgrading its back-office capabilities and seeks a supply chain leader to accelerate our progress, and growth, even further.   The successful incumbent will bring a balanced tactical and strategic skillset to bear.

Reporting to the EVP Customer Delivery, the successful candidate will be responsible for short-term performance, mid- and long-term development, and successful project implementation of the nationwide Warehouse function.   As the company’s senior-most executive with a functional mandate focusing on “right order, right place, right time”, the VP will have the opportunity to play a key, driving role in the growth and success of the company.

The VP will be responsible for both the strategic development and daily execution of all that happens within the four walls of the company’s distribution centers and warehouses, with three primary responsibilities:

  1. Deliver financial budgets and service-level commitments so the company exceeds its overall revenue plan and NPS target.  Ensure execution of daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual commitments.
  2. Improve continually the quality, consistency, and cost-effectiveness of all warehousing functions and processes
  3. Develop increased operational capabilities through process improvement, technology, team development, and culture
  4. Drive the successful implementation / deployment and ongoing use and enhancement of our new WMS (D365) across the DC and satellite warehouses, including associated process and physical changes.
  5. Transform the company’s distribution and material handling network to meet the requirements of a business twice our size through a small number of very high impact, foundational projects.
  6. Develop, coach and mentor, and upgrade the team as needed to better support organizational growth and build a deeper bench

The VP will directly manage the most-senior manager of each RDC and indirectly oversee the warehouse functions of non-stocking locations, with a total warehouse staff in the 250-275 FTE range.  The VP also has direct oversight of 4 staff managers and analysts.

Success measures over the next 12 months include:

  • Successful implementation of D365.
  • Develop and execute a plan to improve inventory accuracy and fill rate while reducing same day reschedules.
  • Strengthen the team and improve tNPS.  (tNPS is a process by which Empire applies Net Promoter Score methodologies to our own team to assess how we are as a place to work.)
